I went to Ben Franklin with Mike so it has been many years. It sounded like he has so much going for him and his family. I am sure he will be missed by many. But what a shock it is for his life to be cut short and so young as we all now know.

Upon the recent passing of Mike Arnold, I wondered about our loss of David Kenty as well. And I thought how ironic it was that nothing was posted about David until I got smart enough (duh, Harry!) to go to In Memory and saw the number of tributes there.

I know David and I never shared a class so I knew little about him, other than that he was smart. Over the past few days since Mike's passing, I kept asking myself more questions about David. Did he quake at the prospect of one of Mr. Powers' tests like the rest of us? (Probably not; after all, he was our valedictorian!) But I didn't know. Thanks to the posts of fellow classmates, I now know a little bit more about him and how he affected some of us who share that common bond of the Class of 1963.

I hope that we will all resolve as we grow older, our memories fade, and our numbers dwindle to go to the forums, the In Memory page, and wherever else to share our recollections with our classmates. I plan to and I hope others will do the same. I have some kind words I'll need to say soon in some other In Memory entries.

I also did not know Mike well. We went to different JHSs and were not in the same homeroom. Nonetheless, I do have a story to share. My step brother, Darrell Lee Jones, class of '62 and Mike both ran track, specifically the 880 (back in the days when races were measured in yards not meters). On a particular day they were both entered in the same race. I was standing a few yards from the finish line. My brother was leading. He looked over his right shoulder and Mike was hauling the mail. My brothers eyes got as big as saucers and he kicked it into high gear. I do not remember who won the race. I think my brother did but I would not take that to the bank. I have told both of them this story. Neither claimed to have any recollection of the event but it makes a good story anyway. May Mike be at peace and condolences to his family.

Harry: You were right about Mike Arnold being the player you had to watch. It surely wasn't about me or any of the other players. Mike was the go to guy. We didn't win a game but we surely had fun. Mike was such a special person to be around and we would have liked to win a game but it was about the friendships that we developed. Like you say we are getting older and time is not on our side but friendships last forever. Hope to see you on our 50th. Ralph F. Howard, Jr.

I can only add similar thoughts to those already said and also my thanks to those earlier writers who helped rekindle the shared experience we all had at NHS.

I don't think Mike and I ever shared a class, a study hall, or probably even a lunch table. But we did share the Newark schools cameraderie. Two items in sports come to mind.

While I was at Lincoln, I still remember Coach Schenk that the only guy we had to worry about guarding for Franklin (sorry Gartner, Howard, Koppert, et.al) was Mike. (Remember, too, that this is coming from the 11th man on a 13-man team!)

And then, in high school, in an intramural basketball game, Mike took exception to a foul committed by one of my teammates and charged him. I grabbed Mike from behind and yanked him away from that confrontation. That, of course, Mike being the competitor that he was, prompted him to threaten that I would be next. Nothing came of it, of course. We all calmed down quickly.

But I had hoped to corner him at the 50 year and ask him if he remembered the incident and if he remembered who my teammate was who started the whole thing. And, if that teammate were at the reunion (though I have a feeling it was Glenn Cunningham) we'd three get together and have a laugh over our "basketball intensity."

But, like so many things we'd like to do, time intervenes and puts dampers on our plans. I hope the rest of us can get together in two more years (no more of us leave) and share the joys of even the littlest things that we shared at NHS.

Raise a glass to all of our classmates who, like Mike, have left us too soon. And give special thanks for those who have had health problems but have survived to still be with us.

I was shocked to say the least when hearing of Mike's passing. Got to see him at our 65th birthday party and was so happy to see him. I first met Mike at Ben Franklin Junior High and was on the basketball team with him. You can see the picture on Old Photo's. He was the guy that we looked for leadership but was more of a great friend than anything. I cherish the time that we had through school and I will surely miss him at our 50th class reunion. I just hope I am there to enjoy all my classmates but GOD doesn't promise me tomorrow. Thank you Dan for this addition so we can express our feelings. Ralph F. Howard, Jr.

Dan's comments about how people we knew in high school somehow impact us more than others we've known later in our lives is very true.

I sat next to Mike at the 65th birthday party dinner last year and I had a chance to get to know him better. I learned from the funeral home web site that he enjoyed motorcycle riding. I would like to have known that at the dinner last year since I enjoy riding too. We could have shared some good stories.

Mike was a great guy and will be missed.

It is funny (surreal) how we seem to have a mystical connection to people we haven’t seen in so many years and some we never knew very well even then. I marvel at our ability to re-kindle ties back to a yesteryear period but don’t have the same feelings for later-on experiences’. I have little connection to college friends, grad school buddies or even long time working relationships (even some lovers) (TMI?).

But I feel a special kinship(?) to those I graduated from NHS with. A sense of communal pride, commitment, and a strong desire to see how they have fared in life. I was especially sad hearing of Mike’s death. I felt he was a benchmark for the rest of us and hearing of his death only solidified my own commitment to accomplish those things that I have as yet done but want to do. Mike and I had talked about a golf outing to Moundbuilders Country Club with Danny Porter and Dave Dragics. Col Porter said he had never played there and had always wanted to. I hope we still get the chance and can hoist a few to Mike.

I hope we can continue to get enjoyment from the web site and if you see any improvements or errors I can correct, please let me know.

Mike was born 20 mar 45. Vietnam nam vet. COO for a bunch of lawyers. Highly thought of member of his Presby church, pastor told some great personal stories. Son and daughter Shelly and Jon expressed how special a Father he was to the two of them and how close they were with him. They both felt good about how much attention he paid to them and vice versa to the very end. Great service for a wonderful friend. Jim

Hi, all

This is Karen, Larry's wife. Dan asked that I post this info. I updated Larry's profile to include his nursing home address:

He has frontal lobe dementia which is a rare dementia. The frontal lobes are the last to develop in a human being which is around 21-25. Now you know why teenagers are a pain in the rear!

The neurologist said that Larry was so smart that he had been compensating for a very, very long time. It is a behavioral disease and the memory issues become later on in the disease. Looking back, I know that he has had it for at least 12 years. The worse was when we made him go to the doctor in 2007. While diagnosing him for the dementia, they discovered that he had diabetes and needed heart surgery.

So we have had a hard 3 years before I had to decide that the nursing home could take care of him better than I could. He is so impulsive, he would take 3 mile walks while I was sleeping! And he would not let me give him his medicine. And of course he wouldn't take it correctly.

The way the brain works is that short term moves the information to the long term. Larry's short term is shot to hell. He has to repeat it over and over again in order to remember it.

He still remembers the past and would love to hear from you. If you have any school pictures of yourself, please include that in your letters. I do not know what he did with his yearbook.

Once medicaid is finalized, I will probably move him closer to Newark so family members are able to visit him. I'll keep his profile up to date.
